[Ciel mimics Sebastian's intensity with a severe, but miffed look. It seems like they are discussing the birth of the universe with how they are whispering and staring. Cures for cancer. How to accurately integrate interstellar space travel with wormholes. How to hard-boil an egg without cracking it.]
Don't be ridiculous! [It's hisses under his breath. He knows where you're going with this, Sebastian!] I am not just going to be bait for whatever that thing is!
[ He raises a finger as if to make a point and nods ]
Precisely. So we should absolutely do everything we can to find it. And if you have an allergy to them, then that is the best method thus far to be able to track them, young master.
[NN. Don't dare bring ethics into this, Sebastian! He doesn't care if it slaughters everyone else on the ship! (He does.)] What?! [Trying so hard to keep his voice low as to not cause a scene, so it's raspy and high-pitched.]
I am not letting some strange space beast burst out of my chest! And I'm not getting anything out of finding this thing, or these things, so I am certainly not going to search for it! [He's getting the satisfaction of not being murdered later out of it, don't let him fool you.
He crosses his arms. Resolute.] They could be anywhere. I'm not walking through this entire ship.
[ Sebastian is giving the same amount of (stupid) intensity, and he's even come up with a half-feasible plan on the spot as soon as cats became involved. ]
There is a way that we could tackle this problem. I realize this is rude, so please forgive me, but in lieu of these extreme circumstances, your discomfort could be put aside for some time for the sake of catching these [ "wonderful" ] creatures. If I were to carry you, we could move through the ship quite efficiently, and I would also be able to protect you sufficiently from any threats, of course.
[ A nod ]
I also disagree that you would not get anything. Catching the culprits would bring great recognition and reward, which would mean potentially completing the contract more quickly.
[God dammit, Sebastian. He never should have told you that he was fucking allergic to whatever the hell was running around on the ship because, obviously, all you're going to think about is cats.
He gives Sebastian a look. It's one that he typically gives when Sebastian does, in fact, come up with half-feasible plans on the spot with a stupid amount of intensity.
Or it's the look he gives when Sebastian is pre-occupied with cats of any shape and size.] Hmph. [Well... Sebastian... isn't wrong. Ridiculous, but not wrong. They could actually get through a good portion of the ship if Sebastian was carrying him. His allergy would alert them to the presence of the creature. And he trusts, damn him, Sebastian enough to know the demon would protect him sans being able to poof something out of thin air.
Recognition and reward would just be icing on the cake.] What do you plan to do if we find one?
[ That answer comes immediately and simply, but the second one just causes Sebastian to raise an eyebrow quizzically, as if the possibility had never crossed his mind. After all, it absolutely hadn't. For most people, this would be something to seriously consider, but even a Reaper's scythe through his chest had only slowed him, and that was because of the particular qualities of a Reaper's scythe. Any mortal implement was nothing he had to concern himself. ]
If they are stronger than me, then this ship will not survive, young master. It is as simple as that.
[Ciel isn't sure if "capture" is a Green mission objective or a Sebastian mission objective. He thinks it's the latter considering the possibility of what these things may be....
For a moment, he regards Sebastian with a thoughtful expression; critically thoughtful, not concerned thoughtful. Then he lifts his eye up and around, scrutinizng everyone else. He doesn't know how strong these things really are, and Sebastian is no help not knowing either. What if they were stronger? What if he lost his best chess piece before he could finish what he set out to do?
What if the ship really was doomed to be destroyed by these things?
No. No use thinking like that.] Let's make sure this ship will survive then, or we'll never get back home.
[ It is without a doubt a Sebastian objective, though of course, if asked, he could come up with a perfectly reasonable justification. So really, it's better that Ciel just makes his own assumptions without asking for elaboration, if only for the sake of his sanity.
Still, with the offer seemingly accepted, even if the idea itself was ridiculous, Sebastian offers a hand to Ciel as a familiar offer to pick him up. It's at least not the most ridiculous thing they've done to accomplish a goal. They have quite a large list of things to top it, actually... ]
I am not concerned, at least. Even a similar creature to our pets would not be able to injure me, young master.
I should hope so. [Or you would be such a disappointment.
For a moment, he peers st the offered hand as if trying to decide whether or not he wants to be miserable, but then he realizes he is always miserable no matter where he is. A sigh.
He takes Sebastian's hand without any of the hesitancy he had shown previously. His resolve is strong. He is going to suffocate, but maybe they can capture one. Let them get this over with....]
[ Sebastian laughs pleasantly when Ciel takes his hand, and in a familiar, almost automatic gesture, he leans down to pick Ciel up in one arm as easily as if he didn't weigh a thing. He had disliked this at first, but when he had seen how much that displeasure had pleased Ciel, well. That had reversed quickly enough. ]
Now, young master, where to start...? Please, give me an order.
[It's annoying being touched bu a demon, much less held, but it has happened so many times, Ciel has just given up being grumpy about it. This time, he goes right up into Sebastian's arms, looping one of his own around Sebastian's shoulders. Settling himself, he lifts his free arm, the left, to activate the user interface on the cuff.
He's well acquainted with the map of the ship.
Briefly, he looks it over. There's some places he's not familiar with, but it's best not to rush to a lesser known area in case they are reprimanded. Should they start at Medical nearby? Should they wander the halls?] Suppose they are what we think they are, Sebastian, or something similar.
[He turns his head to look the demon in the face, though his arm is still lifted for reference.] Where would you hide if you were a cat?
[ The answer, unsurprisingly, comes immediately. There are a few matters that Sebastian gives the utmost, most serious consideration, and at the top of that list is definitely anything related to cats... ]
A small, confined space. Cats do not like wide spaces—They prefer areas that are closer to their size.
[ At least despite the moronic nature of the actual topic, Sebastian can give a good answer. ]
[Yes, well. At least he knows he can ask the fucking cat connoisseur where on this ship a cat might, in fact, be hiding.
He still doesn't think it's a cat.
Even with his episode in the airlock, even with Sebastian's enthusiasm, even with the claw marks, especially with the autopsies... he doesn't think it's going to be cats. That is just ridiculous. Mogget is the only cat here he has to worry about, right? Right.]
The vents. [He looks down at the map of the ship. There's really no legend for vents, but he guesses Sebastian would be as good a person as any to be able to pick out vents on a spaceship if they just looked over a place.] Let's start by Research and Medical, where everything began.
[ Sebastian holds Ciel a little more tightly, but then with scarcely a glance towards the people around and how they might react, Sebastian quickly kicks off to make their visits around the ship quick. He could go faster if he wanted, but this was the speed that Ciel was most comfortable with, so ever the dutiful butler, of course he has his master's comfort in mind. Still, it's definitely fast, so they arrive at the Research and Medical wing in no time, barely a minute later.
He slows to a stop carefully, already looking around for where the vents might be, and he has little difficulty identifying where they likely are. Some of them stand out prominently, but even those that are more subtle stand out to his sensitive ears, since the soft echo of air being blown through and filtered in the walls is enough for him to pick out. He doesn't say anything to that, just looks at Ciel curiously to appraise his reaction.
...He also considers lifting him up towards a vent, but resists that urge. ]
[While the interior of the ship is stupidly confusing for a Victorian, it doesn't take a genius to see the makings of a vent. Ciel peers at the ones lining the edge of the ceiling against the wall.
His eye narrows.] Hold me steady. [Already, he's twisting in Sebastian's grasp. He takes the demon by the shoulders with both hands, pushing himself up over the shoulders until he can hook his foot on the top of one of them, then he uses that to continue to push himself up. Naturally, he is climbing onto Sebastian's shoulders in a stand, relying on Sebastian to hold him by the legs and ankles so he doesn't fall over on the floor.
You betta hold those damn skinny chicken ankles.
When he's finally up-right, he puts his hands palm-out toward the wall, waiting for Sebastian to move over to the vent.] Move closer.
[ But Sebastian is cut off by a sound of displeasure as Ciel starts to climb on his shoulders without any consideration. It seems to worry Sebastian slightly, but more than that, he's irritated. Being treated like no more than a ladder now when there was a simpler solution... What a brat.
He grasps Ciel's calves securely, tightly enough so that there's no risk of Ciel being unsteady, but gently enough that it's not painful. Sebastian walks carefully and with poise, carefully scooting along the wall to get to the vent without making Ciel fall. ]
[As the wall comes into reach, he places his hands on it gently, using it for balance. The vent is still just a tad too high for his head, and he can only see just over the edge with his eye. The slits in it are irritatingly small, too, on top of the interior being black as pitch.] Be quiet.
[He can't see anything at all.
But he can feel the very faint breeze of air blowing out over his forehead.
Was the creature in there, hiding away? Did the vents all connect like one would hypothesize? That'd mean the thing could be anywhere on this God forsaken ship, traveling unnoticed and with ease to and fro. Ciel grits his teeth.
With a jerk, as indication to Sebastian, he brings his foot up off the demon's shoulder and instead puts it right on top of the demon's head. He presses down, lifting himself up further so he can get a better look through the holes of the vent.]
[ Ah, is this punishment for his comment earlier? Sebastian wouldn't be surprised if that's the case, but this is enough for him to lose some of that pretense of the refined, elegant butler, no matter how small. Sebastian makes a small sound of displeasure, maybe even a pained noise, since those little heels of Ciel's do not feel pleasant digging into his head and pulling at his hair. He grits his teeth, but even that's not comfortable, so instead, Sebastian smiles in a strained way, though it's wide enough to show those sharp, demonic teeth that his usually clipped smiles hide.
He still holds Ciel's legs securely and obediently stays quiet, but his grip does tighten to become slightly painful at this point. He'd easily brush it off as simply making sure Ciel was secure, since that was true, but petty revenge is the name of the game. ]
[Yes, how does that foot feel right in your big, stupid, demon head?
Sebastian's annoyance is satisfying for the time being, and Ciel purposefully shifts his weight to make sure the foot grinds here and there; of course, he'll merely say he is trying to balance so that he can see if asked.
The steel squeeze to his legs is the only thing that gets him to behave. (For now.)
The vent is as dark as it was before. He softens his breath until it's nothing, until he's holding it, and then he turns his head so he can listen. The air whispers against the shell of his ear, cool and crisp, but no sound floats on it. Okay....
He turns his head back, and the next puff of air that smacks him in the face out of the slits is like sweeping a dusty feather right under his nose. A tickle begins in the back of his head, a pressure that makes his eye water. He opens his mouth, curling his fingers to brace himself. Ah...
[ When Ciel purposely digs his heels into Sebastian's head, it even conjures up a growl of irritation, but that's all the protest that Sebastian gives, though Ciel will surely be satisfied by even that.
Still, when Ciel sniffles, Sebastian sighs heavily and swallows his irritation as he glances up in an attempt to see how Ciel is doing, though the angle is of course awkward. He can see Ciel bracing himself as if he's about to sneeze, and Sebastian then wonders how they'll navigate the vents from here, but when the reaction is mild, he assumes it's simply dust. Ah, well. He opens his mouth to gently suggest that they move to another area, but then Ciel does see something.
Sebastian is at least quick to react, since truly, when it comes to his safety, Ciel has absolutely nothing to worry about so long as Sebastian is around. His eyes turn a much brighter crimson, since he has to draw on more refined reflexes than a human can muster to move swiftly, but it's hardly taxing. He could simply move and catch him when he drew upon his demonic speed.
However.
This is a punishment for an unruly child, certainly. He does draw upon his strength to do it safely without injuring Ciel, but as Ciel pushes himself away from the wall, Sebastian's grip on his legs stays just as firm. He takes a step forward while simply moving his arms further behind his own back, carefully and gently adjusting to the arc of Ciel's fall until he's dangling upside-down behind Sebastian's back. His head probably bumps the back of Sebastian's knees, but it's not much of an impact at all. Sebastian just wants to make sure to humiliate his young master, of course. ]
Ah. How did this happen.
[ He doesn't sound concerned at all, and he certainly doesn't move to set Ciel down. Ciel is perfectly fine, after all, so he can just be like this until he orders Sebastian otherwise. ]
That's all he can think as he goes over, heart pounding, stomach leaping up into his throat. Sebastian isn't going to catch him. To his undoubtedly later displeasure, a yell of pure horror escapes him, an additional "AHHHH" that extends from right around Sebastian's shoulders when he's cocked at a sixty degree angle all the way down until his head thumps the back of the demon's knees.
He stares, wide-eyed and quivering with adrenaline, at the up-side down wall across the hallway. He's not sure what was more terrifying, seeing those lights in the dark vent, or being rollercoasted over Sebastian's back.
He's dead. He has fallen onto the floor on his head, and he's now dead. It's all over. The End has come.]
[Then he realizes what Sebastian has done. What an asshole! How ridiculous does he look right now hanging over backward with Sebastian holding his legs? (As if he didn't look ridiculous ten seconds ago with the vent.)
The horror in him is quickly masked by growing rage, and his face twists darkly. Tantrum in three... two... one....]
Sebastian, you bastard! What the hell was that?! [He swings his arms, rocking himself at the waist. He's trying to get a good hit on Sebastian, but he can do little more than bang and bop the demon's thighs and hips.]
Put me down this instant! That's not how you treat your master!
[ Sebastian laughs openly as Ciel throws his little tantrum, and there are a few ideas that come to mind to tease him more. He could pretend to drop him, comment on this being a suitable punishment for an unruly child... There were quite a few options, weren't there? And so, as he ponders them slowly, he just keeps Ciel there for a few seconds, taking the brunt of Ciel's little fists hitting his legs. ]
Ha ha ha, oh dear, how will I lower you safely...
[ That's his completely transparent cover for keeping him like this, at least, since a moment later, he starts to set Ciel down. It is awkward like this, since he can't simply flip him right-side up (Well, he could, but he imagines that Ciel would dislike that even more), so Sebastian instead crouches slowly and carefully until Ciel's head gently bumps the ground, then his shoulders, and his torso from there. ]
Now, young master, I will let go of your legs, so do be careful.
[ Which is only barely a warning, since he totally let's go right after. Don't collapse in a heap, nerd. ]
[The moment Sebastian talks about lowering him safely, Ciel realizes his error. He should have never asked to be put down. Actually, he should have been more specific when he was told to be put down, and, dammit, he just knows he is two seconds away from ending up on the floor.
And then he's on the floor, head first, then shoulders, then torso.
Sebastian releases his legs too soon after the warning, and Ciel promptly ends up in a undignified heap, a tangle of scrawny limbs and legs. SEBASTIAN, YOU SHITHEAD.] Don't dump me on the floor!! [He's so furious that steam would be rolling out of his ears if it were possible.
Twisting, he tries to unfurl himself gracefully (except it hardly works like that), and he throws a scathing glare up at Sebastian from his place on the floor. HOW DARE.
He clambers up to his feet, and since Sebastian on purpose--he knows this was on purpose, asshole--put him in this predicament, he is going to slap away any hand that tries to help him. Don't even think to pretend to help him up after you put him there to begin with!]
serious roleplaying. nailed it.
Don't be ridiculous! [It's hisses under his breath. He knows where you're going with this, Sebastian!] I am not just going to be bait for whatever that thing is!
It has killed three people!
